Wellington is a market town in Somerset with a population of around 16,700, situated 7 miles southwest of Taunton and close to the Devon border. The town sits at the foot of the Blackdown Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and has served as a stopping point on the route between Bristol and Exeter for centuries.
The town’s name appears in records from the Anglo-Saxon period as Weolingtun, and by the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 it had become Walintone. Wellington received its royal charter in 1215, and during the Middle Ages it grew as a trading centre on the main road west. A fire in 1731 destroyed much of the older town, and the rebuilding that followed gave Wellington many of the Georgian buildings that still line its streets today.
The wool industry became central to the town’s prosperity, with Fox Brothers establishing their mill in 1772. That mill still produces cloth for Savile Row tailors, making it one of the oldest continuously operating woollen mills in the country.
Wellington is perhaps best known for giving its name, indirectly, to the capital of New Zealand. The 1st Duke of Wellington, whose title derives from this Somerset town, was associated with the company that founded the New Zealand settlement. The Wellington Monument on the Blackdown Hills, a 175-foot triangular obelisk visible for miles around, was built between 1817 and 1854 to honour the Duke’s victory at Waterloo.
Today the town has a quieter, more self-contained feel than neighbouring Taunton. The high street is lined with independent shops, cafes, and traditional pubs, and the surrounding countryside gives it a semi-rural setting that appeals to families and downsizers alike. Wellington is large enough to have its own schools, GP surgeries, and leisure facilities, but small enough that most things are within walking distance of the centre.
For buyers and landlords, the town offers better value than many parts of Somerset, with the added benefit of proximity to the M5 and Taunton’s rail links. Properties here tend to attract families looking for more space, professionals working in Taunton or Exeter, and retirees seeking a slower pace without being cut off from larger towns.
