King’s Gatchell is a house of great historical interest. Its origins may be late mediaeval and it has a jointed cruck beam roof. In the main bedroom is a frieze bearing the coat of arms of James I who died in 1625. That room is thought to have been a courtroom during his reign. The house has been extended and enlarged in different centuries since that time giving it a fascinating character. The house is built of stone and brick, with carved Bath stone dressing to much of the exterior.
